CANT PUT CAR IN GEAR?

Hi there,i recently bought a mg zr diesel,been driving fine till last morning,turned car on,and it wouldnt go in any gear(unless the engine is off)today i had a better look at the clutch cable,followed it down to the arm the connects to the gearbox?any way i un hinged it and moved it by hand to see if cable was moving free,it seems to be,but when i move the arm it doesnt spring back in any direction,should it?iv never had any problems with the clutch slipping ect.i kind forced it into reverse(i know i know!)it it moved fine enough lol.where do i go from here?does it look like a new clutch?not very good with cars but forced to learn due to lack of funds!thanks for reading
