I have an older hinged safe that we want to open without a locksmith as their too damn expensive?

How can i get it open ? The hinges are on the outside of the safe and it is not labeled as to what company made this safe. We beat the living hell out of it with a hammer, and did not work lol. We are not sure whats in the safe as we lost contact with the former owners of the store we bought with the safe inside of it. If all else fails we'll call the stupid locksmith...
